Contact Lenses

Not getting the results you want out of your contacts?

We work with patients who are not getting the vision correction, the comfort, or the other results they are seeking from their current standard contact lenses. Specialty lenses are, in the simplest of terms, lenses that are custom designed for the unique shape of each individual cornea. Patients that are generally hard-to-fit, have corneal conditions like keratoconus, or just have had trouble with regular soft lenses, one of the following lenses may be right for you!

Myopia Mangement

In a person with myopia, the eyeball is abnormally long from front to back. The light rays that should focus directly on the retina instead focus in front of it. This makes distant objects appear blurry. Many children who have myopia may not notice that their vision is blurry; they may assume that their vision is normal and not realize that they have a correctable problem.

The precise cause of myopia is usually unknown although genetic predisposition may play a role. People who spend much time doing near work may also be more likely to develop myopia. However, this may be unavoidable; almost everyone today is involved in near stimuli with computers and smartphones, there are just as many studies that show that this increases the risk of myopia as those that come to the opposite conclusion. The following contacts are different methods to combat this increase in Myopia

Orthokeratology

Soft Multifocal lenses

Mi Sight Lenses

Orthokeratology lenses are worn at night rather than during the day. They gently reshape the cornea, providing clear daytime vision for patients who struggle with myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.

Ortho-K is a growing and highly effective away of treating blurriness and the progression of myopia. Student-athletes love the freedom of no contacts or glasses during the day and parents love that it combats the progression of myopia that is on the rise to the use of more near devices in younger generations like tablets, laptops and phones.

The soft multifocal lens is shaped like a bullseye, and it includes two separate sections that focus light differently. The center portion of the lens corrects nearsightedness, so that distance vision is clear. It accomplishes this by focusing light directly on the retina.

The outer section of the lens uses focusing power to bring peripheral light rays into focus in front of the retina. The multifocal soft lens provides constant distance and near correction to the “treatment zone” of the eye, removing hyperopic defocus, which causes axial elongation of the eye and results in the onset of myopia.

Corrects nearsightedness and slows the progression of myopia in children (aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment) by 59% on average, utilizing special ActivControl® Technology. 95– 100% of age-appropriate children said they preferred wearing their MiSight® 1 day contact lenses over wearing their glasses.

Children as young as 8 years were able to handle their lenses confidently soon after initial fitting. These are daily safe lenses that are FDA approved to reduce myopia while providing elite comfort and vision.

Scleral Custom Contacts

Scleral lenses offer total stability. These lenses won’t move when they are worn. Their customized fit means they won’t fall out, regardless of the level of intensity during an activity. This provides a great advantage to athletes who rapidly move their eyes and need to refocus quickly during gameplay.

Scleral lenses provide superior optics. They provide crisp, clear vision, and significantly reduce glare and light sensitivity.

Scleral lenses protect eyes against outdoor elements. Environmental conditions such as wind, dust, sand, pollen, or chalk won’t get into the eyes or dry them out. Scleral lenses are designed to constantly hydrate the eye with a cushion of preservative-free saline that exists between the lens and the ocular surface while safeguarding the entire cornea and part of the sclera. Their large diameter lenses keep environmental irritants out and is actually used as a treatment for dry eye!

Scleral Contact Lens, Keratoconus

This illustration shows how amazing scleral lenses are. This represents a patient with keratoconus a corneal condition that causes the cornea to be more shaped like a cone instead of a dome. Most people with this can not achiever 20/20 vision in glasses or soft contacts but can with scleral lenses. Whatever corneal deformities or issues may have a scleral lens vaults the entire cornea, and fills in the gaps with fluid. This is basically like creating a new cornea without any aberrations or distortion common in people with a variety of corneal abnormalities.

Hard Contact Lenses (RGP)

Gas permeable lenses hold their shape and move on the eye with each blink. This movement pumps oxygen-containing tears under the lens. Soft lenses conform to the shape of the cornea and have only minimal movement with blinks, so little or no tears circulate under soft lenses.

GP lenses provide sharper vision. Because they are custom-machined to a smooth surface and maintain their shape on the eye, GP lenses provide sharper vision than soft lenses, which can fluctuate in shape and clarity if they start to dry out. Gas permeable lenses also provide a more stable and accurate correction of astigmatism.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

A hybrid contact lens consists of a rigid gas permeable center with a soft silicone hydrogel skirt. Thus, it is a hybrid of two contact lens designs. Any patient can wear this type of contact lens, but hybrids are especially beneficial to certain patients.

In our office, the most common use of this lens design is for patients who have prescriptions with a significant amount of astigmatism. These patients achieve the best vision when their lenses are perfectly stable on their eyes. This is often not the case in traditional soft contact lenses for astigmatism because many patients experience variable vision especially after a blink. Hybrid lenses, however, provide stable vision even after a blink. The rigid center of the contact lens provides a precise prescription and the soft skirt anchors the contact lens in place providing stable, clear vision throughout the day.
